The Experience: Reiki Healing / Reiki Certification
The Location: Todos Santos, Mexico
The Set Up: Tried my first Reiki session at the same time as my Reiki Level 1 training
The Takeaway: Extremely relaxing experience that felt like a massage/nap/meditation combo
During my immersive yoga training three years ago in Todos Santos, Mexico, we had two off days out of the 16-day experience. One of our options for the off-day was to get Reiki Certified. I was intrigued, so I asked the Reiki Master if I were able to participate in the training even though I had never received Reiki myself, and she responded by saying “If you feel called to be at the training, then you’re meant to be there”. The most perfect and most yogi response!
What I learned during my training was that Reiki is a hand-on-healing Japanese technique that was founded by Dr Mikao Usui in 1922 after a deep spiritual experience. The word Reiki is made up of two Japanese words - Rei which means "God's Wisdom or the Higher Power" and Ki which is "life force energy". Put together, Reiki translates to "spiritually guided life force energy." Reiki is a natural and safe method of healing that everyone can use. People have used this practice to heal virtually every known illness or disease - and you can use this practice safely among your other medicine or therapy.
So there I was sitting that Sunday afternoon in the yoga room, laying down on blankets smelling palo santo about to receive my first reiki session from another woman in my session. In Reiki, you are typically receiving the session on a massage table or on the ground with blankets. Today, you can also receive long distant Reiki Sessions via Skype too! The practitioner starts with a little intro, and then moves to placing his/her hands hovering over different focal points of the body, and following the rhythm and movement of the chakras.
The entire session felt so peaceful and warm - as if someone was just spreading loving energy all over my body in the most relaxed and worry-free way. I even fell asleep at one point - which is totally okay in Reiki! You are there to receive, and nothing else.
After the session, we both shared our experiences. For her, she felt more heat and energy over my head. For me, I just simply felt extremely calm.
Reiki is a deeply relaxing treatment that feels like you just received a combination of a nap / massage / meditation. I’d recommend Reiki for anyone looking for new ways of healing or tapping into the energy source around us.
Since this training a few years ago, I’ve fallen in love with energy healing and learning about this ancient practice. I’ve taken my Level 2 training and love how we can receive and send loving energy to ourselves and others.
